FAQ
How to get a free insulation grant?
There's £1Bn free cash available to help increase your home's energy efficiency or pay your energy bills – hundreds of millions of pounds of it. The key is knowing where to look.
Lots of UK insulation grants go unclaimed. Many – but not all – are for the elderly, disabled or those on lower incomes. Free Insulation Grant can help you to check if you qualify under the GBIS scheme 2025 and, if yes, put you in touch with your local installer.
All you have to do is fill out our simple online form!
What is GBIS?
An insulation grant is money or a voucher which contributes towards the cost of having your home insulated. Although it may not cover the full cost of the insulation and you may be asked to make a contribution in some cases, in most cases its completely FREE. Take a look through our ‘Claim For’ tabs to see what kind of insulations there are available.
How does the Government home insulation scheme work?
If eligible, your contact details will be passed on to an approved, local fitter. They will usually contact you within 24 - 48 hours, to arrange a suitable time for a visit. The fitter will visit your home, carry out an energy assessment of your property and check your benefit paperwork. He will confirm if the home insulation grant is available to you.
If you qualify, in many cases you can arrange an installation date there and then.
The current GBIS scheme has been introduced at the end of March 2023 and opened an opportunity for free insulation for a wider group of people, it is certainly worth applying now if you believe you are entitled to it.
How much can I save with free GBIS government grants?
Free GBIS grants are available to those receiving certain benefits. How much you save depends on the type of your property and insulation that is required. By having your home insulated, you can save yourself anywhere between £100 - £450 a year on energy bills. Some types of insulation can cost up to £12,000, so by applying for a grant you can also save yourself this whole fee and increase the value of your property.
Is there a catch?
No there is no catch. If you are on the qualifying benefits and eligible then you are entitled to have the work done so the fitter will be able to proceed with the insulation and often with the heating controls as well. The whole process for you is hassle free.
Will I have to pay anything?
No, GBIS insulation grants and installation are FREE.
How long does it take?
Depending on the type of recommended installation and the type of your home, it can take anything from 4 hours to 2 days. The fitter can advise during FREE survey how long exactly it will take upon examination of your property.
Is there a lot of mess caused?
Whilst the process is going on there might be a fair amount of mess, however, the fitters will always clean up the mess once the job has been completed so you will not have to do this yourself. Please note that for some types of insulation, such as loft insulation, there is hardly any mess, as it is simply rolled out in your loft.
How soon can I get my insulation done?
This is likely to vary, once the surveyor has been in contact with you and went out the see your property (usually within a week of your enquiry), they can then arrange with you a suitable date of installation. Although in most cases we aim to finish as soon as possible, this can take between 1 to 4 weeks.
Do I require a survey?
Yes, a survey is required to determine whether the fitter will be able to carry out the work within your home as the final decision is in their hands. The survey will be FREE of charge.
Am I still able to get a grant if I live in a flat?
Yes you can, but you may not qualify for a cavity wall insulation if you live in a flat.
How long does the insulation last for?
The insulation is fitted to last long term, if it is done to the latest requirements, then it is pretty much for the rest of your lifetime. After you have had the work done, you will not need to worry about having it done again.
Do I have to be a homeowner living in my home?
Yes, in most of cases you need to own the home and live in it, so you could claim a grant. However, if you are a private tenant you can also claim GBIS with the permission of your Landlord.
Can I change my mind?
Yes, you are free to change your mind prior to the installation.
